Short Film Review - Away Script

Short Film Review
I am fairly happy with our short film , I feel confident that we got enough different camera angles in to give it a slightly more professional feel than for example a short film with one camera angle throughout.
One of the main downfalls of the film was that somebody had recorded over some of our work so we had to edit it so that it didn’t show other peoples work. Unfortunately this meant that we lost about 40seconds of footage which in a two minute video is a huge problem.
When we sat down as a group and looked at this script it was clear to us that this was meant to be a somewhat romantic story and as the camera man I tried to relate my filming techniques to this for example when Charlotte and Charlie were saying goodbye I filmed over both of the shoulders individually to show the closeness between the two of them.
We decided to change the script a bit to make it more modern so that it would appeal to our audience more than the old fashioned language used in the original script. We also took a lot of it out as there were long speaking parts and we felt that the audience might get bored of the same person talking for too long.
I also played slow emotive piano music as the soundtrack which also goes well with the theme of sadness and romance, I feel that we chose the perfect for our film and it was also copyright free which means we wouldn’t get in trouble for using it in our film.
I did a lot of lower camera angle shots of both of them walking to show them coming together from the different things that they were doing and followed this up by doing the same type of shots when they were walking away from each other at the end of the film.
I tried to change the camera angle every time the person speaking changed or when they were changing what they were doing, for example when they hand a watch to each other. I feel that this made my film less boring as the shots were constantly changing and flowing between each other so that an audience wouldn’t get bored of the dialogue or the same boring camera angle.
I used some effects at the end of my film for example I faded to black to make it clear to the audience that the film had ended to add to this I also faded out the music to silence so that it ended at the same time as the video.
Next time I make a film I’m going to make sure that I back it up on to memory stick and external hard drive and I’m also going to make sure to buy my own tapes so that nobody records over my work because that was a huge problem as far as final editing went.
